Politics in Washington

Possibly the best city on the planet for a Politics study trip, the major federal political buildings are located in a single area around the National Mall. Your school group can tour and experience first hand all the major centres of power, including Congress, the White House and the Supreme Court. When Congress is in session your group can get passes to the House and Senate galleries to watch the debates; though don’t expect to see the rough and tumble of the Westminster parliament! More impressively, students can access the Senate and House office buildings to discover that many US Congressmen are delighted to spend a little time with British visitors, who have an interest in politics. Outside, it is possible to find lobbyists waiting to meet Congressmen; this gives your students an extra chance to extend their political experience.

Nearby is the National Museum of American History, which often has exhibitions that relate to recent Politics, especially Civil Rights. At the far end of the Mall the Lincoln Memorial must be visited so that students can stand on the very spot where Martin Luther King delivered one of the most famous speeches in US political history.
