West Coast Art & Design Trips

he Getty Centre in Los Angeles forms a unique architectural space. It incorporates 16,000 tons of Travertine stone, some with fossilised leaves and bark imported from Italy. The museum’s permanent collection includes European paintings and drawings, illuminated manuscripts, sculpture and decorative arts from before the twentieth century, as well as photographs from Europe and America. Changing exhibitions focusing on different art or design topics also take place. Students can explore the spaces and light framed by reflective glass exploited by Richard Meier in his design. The central garden is part of the complex and was designed by artist Robert Irwin in an organic manner, which contrasts with the built structures.

In San Francisco the de Young Museum houses a range of work including American painting, decorative art, African and Oceanic art, as well as textiles and photography. Changing exhibitions also take place. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art opened in 1995, designed by Mario Botta, is of significant architectural interest and houses paintings, sculpture, photography, design and media arts. Students will view contemporary art and design in a custom built architectural setting.
