Home of the Classics

Learning about ancient Greece could be made all the more appealing to youngsters with the promise of a study tour to the country itself.

Why not give your pupils some hands-on learning opportunities with a classic tour for schools to take in the sights of Greece?

Journey to the capital Athens and explore the city's stunning buildings while sampling the delights of Greek culture and cuisine. A founding place for democracy, Athens is home to an array of archaeological finds, such as the former commercial and civic centre the Ancient Agora, which was visited by philosophers Socrates and Plato.

You might take your students for a walk down the city's museum mile to further their education with trips to the Benaki Museum, Byzantine Museum and the Museum of Cycladic Art, before watching the guard change at the parliament building in Syntagma Square.

If you think your students would prefer a quieter destination than bustling Athens, you could always book a study tour to the fishing village of Tolon on the south-east coast of Argolis. The relaxed location provides easy access to the Peloponnese, which is named after mythological hero Pelops who is believed to have conquered the region.

Peloponnese is home to many of Greece's most famous classical sights as well as some of the country's bloodiest battles. Cities such as Sparta and Corinth were built in the area, which also boasts archaeological attractions such as Olympia, where the Ancient Olympic Games were founded.

To gain a greater insight into Greek culture and history, why not choose to stay at a number of locations in the country? Following visits to Athens and Tolon, you might decide to treat your pupils to a visit to Delphi, where they can explore archaeological sites such as the columns of the temple of Apollo.

Next, take in the town of Pylos, where youngsters might want to frolic in the sea at the bay before receiving an education in the town's history as a battle base in 425 BC during the Peloponnesian War. You could be interested in visiting Neokastro - a Turkish fortress above the harbour - or the palace, which is thought to have been home to the mythological king Nestor.

After all that brain work, treat your students to some traditional Greek fare and folk dancing at a taverna to make sure the trip combines just the right amount of study with recreation. With so much to see and do in Greece, opt for a study tour to help plan your lessons in the country effectively.
