Duomo - Also known as Santa Maria del Fiore, dominates the city of Florence and is one of the largest cathedrals in the Christian world. Giotto's Bell Tower, standing next to the Duomo, has a rectangular base and stands 89m high, sheathed in red, green and white marble. Santa Croce - Visit the 14th Century Franciscan church. Ponte Vecchio - Dating back to 996 AD, the ancient houses and expensive jeweller's shops on the Ponte Vecchio are still inhabited . The old bridge, crossing the River Arno, was the site where Dante first met Beatrice. Piazzale Michelangelo - Situated on the hill top, overlooking the city, the square offers breathtaking views over the impressive skyline of Florence. The Palazzo Vecchio - Built in the 13th Century, was the seat of government until the 16th Century when it became a private Palace. The Palace contains fine works of art and sculptures.
Art Galleries & Museums
The Uffizi Museum - Home to one of the greatest displays of Renaissance art in Europe, with pieces by many Italian masters including Botticelli, Caravaggio and Leonardo da Vinci. The Pitti Palace - Contains works by Rubens, Van Dyck, Raphael and Caravaggio. You will also find the Galleria Palatina in the Palace. The Piazza della Signoria - Close to the Uffizi and the setting for many sculptures including a copy of Michelangelo's David. Galleria dell'Accademia - Housing many works by Michaelangelo, including the original sculpture of David which was finished in 1504.
Outside the City
Fiesole - A beautiful Etruscan village surrounded by vineyards with panoramic views over Florence. Pisa - Former Roman naval base and home of the physicist Galileo. Its most famous monument is the magnificent marble 'Leaning Tower of Pisa' which stands near the 12th Century Baptistry on the Piazza del Duomo. The leaning tower is now open to the public. Lucca - Is a fine historic town with ramparts, churches, palaces and squares. The Cathedral with its green and white marble facade houses the shrine of the legendary Holy Cross. Siena - A fascinating Gothic city, famous for the red clay hills from where the colour 'burnt sienna' derives its name. Visit the impressive cathedral and the Piazza del Campo, with many superb examples of medieval architecture. San Gimignano -Is known for its many towers built by noble families in the Middle Ages. See the Piazza della Cisterna surrounded by medieval mansions and the Piazza del Duomo with its Romanesque church. From the top of the tower on the Palazzo del Popolo there is a good view of the town. Assisi - Medieval walled city of St Francis.Visit the Basilica of St Francis, patron saint of animals, housing masterpieces by Giotto and Cimabue, the Porta San Giacomo and the Duomo San Rufino.
