Sample Itinerary - 8 DAYS TO EGYPT (CAIRO, ASWAN & LUXOR) BY AIR
Day 1 — London/Cairo. Your flight leaves London for Cairo where you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Cairo for overnight stay.
Day 2 — Cairo and Giza. Your Egyptian sightseeing begins with a guided visit to the Egyptian Museum in central Cairo containing the world’s largest collection of Egyptian antiquities and an appropriate historical perspective for the rest of the trip. Highlight of the visit is undoubtedly the magnificent and unique funeral collection of the Boy King Tutankhamun including the legendary gold death mask. This afternoon journey out to Giza to see the Pyramids and Sphinx, the only remaining monument of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. The Pharaohs built them 3,500 years ago to inspire awe and they still do. Overnight in Cairo.
Day 3 — Cairo/Aswan. This morning leave Egypt’s capital for the short flight to the ancient Nubian capital of Aswan. More peaceful and tranquil than Cairo, the beautiful market town of Aswan now controls the life-giving waters of the Nile through the Russian assisted construction of the magnificent High Dam, which is where our sightseeing begins. This afternoon take a small boat across the waters of Lake Nasser, formed by the construction of the Dam, to the re-located Philae Temple. Overnight in Aswan.
Day 4 — Aswan/Luxor. This morning we enjoy a ride on the traditional sailing boats of the Nile, the feluccas, giving us a close up view of Elephantine and Plantation Islands and the chance to visit the Mausoleum of the Aga Khan who died in his beloved Aswan in 1957. Every day a fresh red rose is placed on his exquisite marble sarcophagus. After lunch leave Aswan by coach for the 3 hour journey across the Nubian desert to Luxor, arriving in time for dinner this evening. Overnight in Luxor.
Day 5 — Luxor Temples. The name ‘Luxor’ comes from the Arabic word meaning ‘palaces’ and nowhere in Egypt do ancient and modern intertwine so completely as in this lovely town on the banks of the Nile. Sightseeing begins in the biggest and most impressive of all of the ancient sites of Egypt, the Temple of Karnak. Dedicated to the Sun-god Amun, this rambling complex of temples, halls and monuments is at its most impressive in the magnificent Hypostyle Hall of 134 giant carved columns in 16 rows. From here it is a short drive to the smaller but no less impressive Temple of Luxor. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore the markets and shops of the town or perhaps relax by the pool. Overnight in Luxor.
Day 6 — The West Bank Necropolis of Thebes. For many, the highlight of the trip will be the morning visit across the Nile to the awe inspiring Valleys of the Kings, Queens and Nobles in the ancient Necropolis of Thebes. Visits will be made to 3 of the Pharaohs’ tombs in the Valley of the Kings before the short drive to Deir el Bahari and the Temple built by Queen Hapshetsut and dedicated to the Cow-Goddess Hathor and on to the Colossi of Memnon, the twin giant statues, which once guarded the entrance to the mortuary temple of Amenophis III. Rest of the day at leisure in Luxor. Overnight in Luxor.
Day 7 — Luxor/Cairo. EITHER a free morning in Luxor with perhaps a visit to the excellent Luxor Museum, or time to haggle for more bargains in the market, before an afternoon flight to Cairo. OR an early flight to Cairo and an optional visit (at a small supplement) to the ancient Citadel of Sultan Saladin, incorporating the Alabaster Mosque of Mohammed Ali, followed by an opportunity to explore the Khan el Khalil bazaar, the largest in the Middle East. Dinner and overnight in Cairo. Optional visit this evening to the Son et Lumiere at Giza. Overnight in Cairo.
Day 8 — Cairo/UK. You will be transferred to Cairo Airport to connect with the return flight to London, arriving later the same day.
