An STS Battlefields tour is an emotional and educational exploration of some of the most momentous arenas of the first and second world wars. Students gain a greater insight into the events that have shaped the modern world, bringing history to life and putting historical facts into context.

You can trust us to deliver. STS have unrivalled experience in organising school tours, taking care of all travel, hotel and excursion arrangements.
Guided or Self-Guided Battlefield tours. You can choose to lead the tour yourself, or add an extra dimension to the tour with a Guide, an expert in WWI and WWII and the areas to be visited.
Tailor Made Tours. All STS tours can be tailor made to meet the exact requirements of individual leaders. Should the destination, or itinerary you prefer not be featured in our brochure, please do not hesitate to contact us and we can make the necessary arrangements.
Inspection Visits
Inspection visits offer party leaders who have a confirmed booking with STS the opportunity to visit the destinations featured in this brochure. Group inspection visits accompanied by STS Staff are organised annually to a variety of destinations. Leaders will be able to inspect sample accommodation and excursions.
For tour destinations not covered by group Inspection Visits, STS offers party leaders with a confirmed booking an opportunity to visit their selected destinations and STS will pay for 1 night bed and breakfast accommodation for two people in a twin room.
Guided and Self-Guided Tours
The monumental events of World War I and II are important elements of most Modern History courses. Every STS Battlefield Tour, supports the requirements of the National Curriculum, bringing history to life and putting historical facts into context. STS offer a range of Battlefield Tours, reflecting the differing requirements and levels of expertise of party leaders, including Guided and Self Guided tours.
Guided Battlefield Tours
Battlefield Guides add a valuable extra dimension to a tour, as well as offering additional support. All our guides have an intimate knowledge of the areas you will visit and the events that took place. As a result they bring historical sites to life with vivid stories, detailed descriptions, as well as maximising student interaction through re-enactments of real events. Your guide can describe the strategies and formations used by either side, as well as the daily routine.
Unless specifically stated as being included in the tour, all guides will carry a supplementary charge.
Self-Guided Battlefield Tours
If you opt for a self guided tour, our experienced Battlefield Tour Coordinators will work with you to put together a tour that exactly meets your requirements. You will receive the same level of service and support and if required, your itinerary will be ordered in such a way to develop themes throughout the tour.
Sample itineraries are included for all destinations. However, we know that no two tours are ever the same. Some groups may wish to visit a site of special interest for their home town, other groups may wish to visit the grave of a family member. Whatever you require, our tour coordinators have the knowledge and experience to design a tour to meet your individual needs.
Combined Groups
A joint tour with another department is a often good way of guaranteeing the trip goes ahead. A tour covering English Literature as well as World War I Battlefields can work very well, meeting the requirements of both GCSE and post 16 syllabuses. Works covered would include McCrae, Blunden, Sassoon, Owen and Grenfell.
A major advantage of STS coach tours is that your coach conveniently collects your group and luggage from school, transports you to the Battlefields and then returns you to your school at the end of the tour. This allows for a good deal of flexibility (subject to driver hours legislation) and easy supervision of the group.
Standard Coach
Tours involving no overnight travel on the continent are generally operated by a standard touring coach with one driver. These are generally 49 seater modern touring vehicles with PA system, radio cassette and forced air ventilation.
Express Coach
Express tours, which involve overnight travel on the continent, are operated by a luxury touring coach with two drivers. These are generally 49 seater modern touring vehicles with reclining seats, drinks service, video (sometimes DVD) and toilet.
Please note the toilet is considered to be for emergency use only.
Air Travel Arrangements
Flying is another option for STS groups. We work with the major UK low cost airlines in addition to scheduled air services. All of our air tours are based on a London flight from Gatwick, Heathrow, Stansted or Luton.
Provincial flights are sometimes possible at a supplement, details on request.
We would also be happy to arrange a return coach transfer to your departure airport. Competitive quotations available on request.
We will notify you of your allocated airport approximately 8 weeks prior to departure.
