Berlin
Berlin has a uniquely varied, rich and disturbing history from the Prussian kings to the Weimar Republic, the rise of Nazism and reunification. The capital of a reunified Germany since 1990, Berlin has undergone a vast transformation to reinstate the city as a modern international centre. From 1961 until 1989 the city was divided by the awesome Berlin Wall, the great divide between the Communism of the East and the Capitalism of the West. The wall resulted from the city’s divided sectors following WWII in which Berlin played such a critical role. The changing face of world politics was symbolised by the fall of this once almost impenetrable barrier. A visit to this vibrant city brings many major events of modern history to life. Berlin is an exciting youthful city which can be experienced on many different levels exploring a range of educational themes.
The mediaeval city of Kraków was founded in the 10th Century by Prince Krak. As Poland's former capital, Kraków has had a chequered history and was spared destruction during WWII. With a wealth of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture, its magnificent mediaeval Market Square is dominated by the 16th Century Cloth Hall.
Prague is a magical city which casts a spell over its inhabitants and visitors alike. The city of a hundred spires was mercifully saved from mass destruction during World War II and is one of the best preserved mediaeval cities in Europe.
Prague is built on several hills and lies on either side of the River Vltava. Hradcany (the castle area) is dominated by the Castle and St Vitus Cathedral, lending a real mediaeval atmosphere to this side of the city. The main city square of Prague is situated in the Staré Mesto (old town) area and is the location of the famous Astronomical Clock and many interesting shops and cafés. The other main area is Wenceslas Square, scene of many demonstrations, which leads on to Na Príkope, the city's main shopping street.
