Continue to Qenko a rock sanctuary with a monolithic alter representing a puma. Then visit the red Fortress of Puka-Pukara and Tambomachay, a beautiful fountain. In the city of Cuzco see the main square, the Cathedral and the Koricancha or Temple of the Sun. Evening dinner and overnight Cuzco.
Day 3 — Sacred Valley / Pisac / Ollantaytambo. Full-day excursion to the beautiful Urubamba, the Sacred Valley of the Inca. Visit the Village of Pisac, founded during colonial times, and set at the foot of a hill crowned by the remains of an ancient Inca city. On Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, Indians barter their products in the main square and artisans from around the area sell their wares. After lunch visit Ollantaytambo, the only Inca town which was not defeated by the Spanish and explore the ruins which tower above. Return to Cuzco, visiting en route the traditional market of Chinchero. Evening dinner and overnight Cuzco.
Day 4 — Royal Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Early morning departure to catch the train to Machu Picchu. Take in stunning views of the mountains all around. You will commence your hike on the Royal Inca Trail by crossing a hanging bridge over the Urubamba River to approach the small Inca archaeological complex of Cachabamba. Then commence a four hour ascent to the ruins of Wiñay Wayna 2700m; an important Inca spiritual site, and one of the finest of all Inca ruins. At this point the trail joins with the main Inca Trail. The Inca Trail cuts across the ridge above Machu Picchu to finally reach Intipunku or Gate of the Sun, at 2700m. From here the trail winds downhill (45 minutes) into the lost citadel of Machu Picchu, at 2400m. Evening dinner and overnight Aguas Calientes.
Day 5 — Machu Picchu/Cuzco. Full guided tour of Machu Picchu, the most spectacular ancient city in the world. Built by the Inca Pachacutec, and comprising stone blocks fitted with masterful precision, Machu Picchu harmoniously blends into the mountain landscape. This fabulous city houses temples, warehouses, a large central square, all connected by narrow roads and steps, and is surrounded by terraces cut into the mountain side which were used for agriculture. Return to Cuzco in the evening aboard the train. Evening dinner and overnight Cuzco.
Day 6 — Cuzco/Moray/Maras. Visit Moray, 53 km NW of Cuzco. Moray has an Inca experimental farm, where a natural depression has been transformed into enormous terraces in the shape of a coliseum. This technology allowed the old Inca farmers to study the effects of altitude on different plants. Continue on to the site of several pre-Inca salt pans which are still used today to crystallize salt from water. Evening dinner and overnight Cuzco.
Day 7 —Cuzco/Piquillacta/Rumilcolca Visit the Inca archaeological site of Piquillacta, 38km SE of Cuzco, site of an ancient city. Highlights include the colcas (grain deposits), and the style of their construction, with small stones, joined with mud. Continue to Rumicolca which serves as a customs post en route to Cuzco. A great and imposing cover is built in carved stone, and is surrounded by high walls where a water channel flows. There is also a great aqueduct used as the water supply for the population of Piquillacta. Return to Cuzco. Evening dinner and overnight Cuzco.
Day 8 — Cuzco/Lima. Transfer from your hotel in Cuzco to the airport for your return flight to Lima and onwards for your international flight home.
