The magical, historical and timeless city of York has a history spanning almost two thousand years. Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Viking settlers have all had a past influence on the City. Today York is a mixture of elegant Georgian town houses and framed timber dwellings which overhang cobbled streets. Right at the heart of the walled city is York Minster the second largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe.
York is also renowned for its famous shopping areas - The Shambles is a narrow medieval street, lined with shops, boutiques and tea rooms.
The city has many museums, including the Castle Museum, Yorkshire Museum, JORVIK Viking Centre and the York Art Gallery. The National Railway Museum is situated just beyond the station, and is home to a vast range of transport material and the largest collection of railway locomotives.
